Cancer Awareness Month

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, Native Americans are the only segment of the US population for whom mortality rates from cancers have not decreased in more than 20 years; and

Whereas, Cancers are among the leading causes of death for Native Americans, and Heritage of Healing seeks to see cancer rates among Native American Nations reduced for the next generation and those to come; and

Whereas, The risk of many cancers can be reduced by making healthy lifestyle choices at a young age; and

Whereas, Heritage of Healing believes this can be accomplished through the education of our Youth to help them make these lifestyle changes; and

Whereas, Heritage of Healing will encourage Native Communities and others to resolve to hold Cancer Awareness events such as Walk/Runs for Health, banquets of traditional foods, etc, each September; and

Whereas, Each September, Heritage of Healing will host vigils, Walk/Runs for Health, educational presentations to include feasts, music, dancing, and hold the National Heritage of Healing Pow Wow on the last full weekend of each September as a means of promoting these ideals;

Therefore, Heritage of Healing proclaims the month of September as

Native American/American Indian Cancer Awareness Month.
